Namebar - The letters are single-color tackle-twill letters attached to a namebar made of knit material. The spacing between the letters on the home jerseys is wider than other years.
Tagging Neck - There are two tags in the neck of the 80-81 jerseys. There is a Maska manufacturer's tag centered in the neck and a size tag sewn off-center towards the right shoulder (to the left if you are looking at the front of the jersey).
Tagging Hem - There is a small single-color Maska logo embroidered onto the far right side of the back hem.
Notes - 1980-81 was the first year that had the small "WASHINGTON" on the logo.
Fight Strap - Nylon base sewn onto jersey with ribbon style strap.

1981-82

Tagging Neck - There are two tags sewn in the neck of the 81-82 jerseys. A Maska manufacturer's tag is sewn in the middle of the neck and the size tag is sewn off-center towards the right shoulder (to the left if you are looking at the front of the jersey).
Tagging Hem - There is a single-color Maska logo embroidered onto the right side of the back hem. It is closer to the middle of the jersey than the previous year. There are 2 versions of the Maska logo, one small and one large. Both of these were worn in 1981/82.
Fight Strap - Nylon base sewn onto jersey with ribbon style strap.

1982-83

Regular Season Tagging Neck - There are two tags sewn in the neck of the 82-83 regular season jerseys. A Maska manufacturer's tag is sewn in the middle of the neck and the size tag is sewn off-center towards the right shoulder (to the left if you are looking at the front of the jersey).
Regular Season Tagging Hem - There is a large single-color Maska logo embroidered onto the back hem. It is positioned slightly off-center to the right.
Playoff Set Tagging Neck - There are two tags sewn in the neck of the 82-83 playoff jerseys. A Maska manufacturer's tag is sewn in the middle of the neck and the size tag is sewn off-center towards the right shoulder (to the left if you are looking at the front of the jersey).

Notes - A lot of the regular season jerseys (maybe all?) had the nameplates removed and then had shorter nameplates sewn back on by the team. The nameplates that were taken off were used on the playoff set jerseys.

1983-84

Numbers - Both the back and shoulder numbers are two-color tackle-twill.
Namebar - Single-color letters sewn onto a mesh namebar.
Tagging Neck - There is a CCM manufacturers tag, which is made of a shiny nylon or polyester material, in the neck. There is usually a size handwritten on this tag in blue ink, although it is typically faded either partially or completely from washing. Under the tag, is a second tag which has a "born on date" printed on it.
Tagging Hem - There is a three-color CCM logo on the back right hem. This tag has white letters on a colored background that is red/red/blue for the both home and road jerseys. Most 1983-84 jerseys have the Trademark symbol (R with a circle around it) after the M, like that shown in the photo.
Patches - Capital Centre 10th Anniversary Patch - This patch was worn on home jerseys only and was added roughly 8-10 games into the season. It was not worn in the 83/84 playoffs.
Fight Strap - Nylon base sewn onto jersey with ribbon style strap.
Notes - The 1983-84 and 1984-85 jerseys have only 4 stars on the sleeves. All other years have 5 stars.
Jersey Sets

Preseason - Jerseys may have been recycled from the previous year, however, on September 30, 1983 the Captials played an exhibition game against Team USA wearing their regular season jerseys.

Regular Season - One set of jerseys was worn for the entire regular season.

Playoffs - A new set of jerseys was worn for the playoffs. The playoff set did not have the Capital Centre 10th Anniversary patch.


1984-85

Most 1984-85 jerseys have a tiny asterisk after the M, which can just barely be seen in the photo below, but some 84-85 jerseys have the Trademark symbol (R with a circle around it) like the 1983-84 jerseys.

The size is usually handwritten on the tag in blue ink, although it is typically faded either partially or completely from washing. There is a date (born on) tag underneath this tag.
Regular Season Tagging Hem - There is a three-color CCM logo embroidered into the back right hem. This tag has white letters on a colored background that is red/red/blue for the home white jerseys and blue/blue/red for the road red jerseys.
Playoff Set Tagging Neck - For the playoff Air-knit jerseys, there is a Maska manufacturers tag, which is made of a shiny nylon or polyester material, sewn in the seam of where the shoulder yoke meets the back of the jersey. The size is usually handwritten on the tag in blue ink, although it is typically faded either partially or completely from washing. "Patents Pending" is written on the back of the tag in both english and french.

Tagging Hem - For set 1, the CCM logo on the tail of the jersey is a two-color logo with blue letters on white blocks for both the home and road jerseys. In addition, set 2 jerseys have the black and orange NHL shield embroidered to the right of the CCM logo. For the playoffs, all jerseys had the CCM logo with the NHL shield.
Fight Strap - Nylon base sewn onto jersey with velcro and snap fight strap.

Regular Season - Set 1, without the NHL shield, was worn until sometime in December. Set 2, with the NHL shield, was worn from sometime in December throughout the regular season.
